Olema Cabernet Sauvignon
Olema Cabernet Sauvignon
Olema is based in Sonoma County and founded in 2005 by the Amici Cellars winery. Back in the late 1990s, a group of friends, John Harris, Bob Shepard, Celia Shepard, and Bart Woytowicz, were hangin’ and decided all they wanted to do was make wine for friends. Cool huh? That casual circle moment, with bottles on the table, laughter in their hearts, and dinner in their bellies, sparked the beginning of something wonderful. They loved the idea so much, they decided to keep at it and founded Amici Cellars. (Amici means friends in Italian.) In just over a decade, they built Amici into a respected Napa Valley label. Then in 2005, they felt inspired to create something new. This time they focused on Sonoma County fruit. That’s when Olema was born. Olema is Miwok for coyote. It’s purpose is to honor the Native American tribe that once lived in Sonoma Valley. The winery sources fruit all over Sonoma from places like Alexander Valley, Dry Creek Valley, Moon Mountain and Sonoma Mountain.
This is a gem of a Cab. So many times California Cabernet Sauvignon can be so dripping with new oak and over ripe fruit it exhausts. Now you may really dig that and I understand, yet this is not that. This is classic Sonoma fruit that focuses on balance over flash. That means no overly oaky, super-ripe, or dryingly tannic wines. Just sleek, fresh, elegant, and totally drinkable juice. It’s bold but not too heavy, layered without being complicated, It’s just straight-up enjoyable.
Serving suggestion: Open and put in fridge for 15 minutes. That tiny bit of coolness will mute the alcohol and allow you to more fully enjoy the fruit.
