Leduc - Frouin 'La Seigneurie' Rouge
Cabernet Franc is a favorite grape as it’s enjoyably versatile and deeply tied to place. It’s also noteable as the parent, along with Sauvignon Blanc, of Cabernet Sauvignon, the world’s most popular grape. Cabernet Franc’s birthplace is Anjou, France. The cool climate of the Loire River offers the grape a long ripening season that gives it time to build its beautiful aromatics. The limestone schist, clay, and gravel soils encourage deeply grown vine roots. This is what gives Cabernet Franc from the area its mineral backbone and graceful structure.
Leduc-Frouin is a family owned winery located smack dab in the heart of Anjou. The 30 hectare estate has been in the family since its inception in 1873. Today it’s in the confident hands of 4th generation winemakers Nathalie and Antoine Leduc. They practice sustainable viticulture, working with ecological methods under the Terra Vitis approach. The approach emphasizes vine health, observation, and environmental respect rather than heavy chemical inputs. All grapes are picked by hand and fully destemmed before fermentatioin in temperature controlled vats and careful cap management. The juice is then matured in concrete and/or stainless steel to preserve the fruit and terroir expression.
Leduc-Frouin’s ‘La Seigneurie’ Rouge is a delicious example of Cabernet Franc and showcases the grape at its most authentic. On the nose, it opens with ripe black cherry, red currant, and wild raspberry, layered with subtle notes of violet, graphite, and a gentle hint of cedar. The palate is medium-bodied and finely structured. It balances dark, juicy fruit with fresh acidity and well-integrated, supple tannins. It offers those wanted earthy undertones and a mineral balance of wet stone. There’s a touch of spice for depth that holds hands with the drink’s vibrant fruit core. The finish is clean, savory, and persistent, leaving a lightly peppered echo that invites another sip.
