Ricardo Cotarella is one of the most influential consulting winemakers in the world. His first ever winery was this one, Famiglia Cotarella. Though back back in 1979 he and his brother Renzo started it under the name Falesco. They changed the name in 2017 for the sake of legacy and family. The Cotarella winery is located right on the Lazio–Umbria border. At the time of its founding, Lazio was a region that was known for producing bulk wine and not considered prestigious at all. Ricardo changed all that with wines such as Montiano and Montevetrano. He also started concentrating on growing his favorite grape, Merlot. He is a wizard with the grape. On top of being an amazing winemaker, Ricardo Cotarella is a genuinely sweet person. For all of his success and the attention that breeds, he’s surprisingly easy going and unassuming.
Sodale is a textbook example of Riccardo Cotarella’s ability to coax depth and polish from unexpected territory. Made from 100% Merlot grown in Lazio, the wine opens with generous aromas of ripe black cherry, plum, and blackberry, layered with cocoa powder, sweet spice, and a hint of Mediterranean herbs. The wine shows its appeal from jump. Sodale is a modern Merlot grown for immediate pleasure yet it still carries a sense of place and restraint that elevates it to pleasing heights.
