This is the best tasting Malbec we’ve found under $20! There’s a plushness here that you just don’t find in Malbec at this price. Its smooth, rich flavors of blackberries, cherries, mocha and high elevation violets, rock the palate. Why is it so good? Because it’s grown in Uco. Uco is where all the cool kids are now growing Argentina’s best Malbec. The place is a subregion of Argentina’s famed Mendoza wine growing area.
Uco is chiller and higher in elevation (3,000-5,000 ft above sea level) than the rest of Mendoza. Karim Mussi established his high elevation, Uco winery in 1999. Karim pays homage to the place by using only indigenous yeasts, original old vine rootstocks and organic farming practices. He also pays homage to his Lebanese lineage with the winery’s name. Altocedro means cedar. His winery is surrounded by the trees and cedar trees are sacred in the Lebanese culture. To us, Altocedro means great juice for little moolah!
